Black Sheep Band Lotto 2016!

Photo on 9-2-16 at 4.53 PM.jpg

It’s that time of year everyone! That’s right, Black Sheep Band Lotto is BACK AT IT for another round of wild, woozy, wacked out fun and the slots are OPEN for anyone brave enough to put their name in the box.
First off, let’s dig out the 411 for those of you who don’t know what’s going on. Here’s how it works: people will put their name (and their name ONLY) in THIS box, which will be sitting in Dumb Records. The names will get drawn randomly at the Black Sheep 11 Year Anniversary Show and the bands will then be formed! If you’re curious, just know that we’ve done this before and you can check out the results of previous band lottos by checking out these photos from the 2014 band lotto as well as the video from the 2015 band lotto!
This is not for the weak minded or half-hearted. By doing this, you’ll be joining a BAND which means there will be people in your life that rely on your commitment, talents and ambitions to complete a project together. Another way of wording that is basically, don’t put your name in the box if you don’t fully intend on playing in a band with randomly drawn people that you may or may not know. Don’t put other people’s names in the box either, just yours! This is definitely something you’ll want to encourage as many of your friends to pursue, because that heightens your chances of playing with people you know! The thrill it will give to play with people you don’t know is definitely an added bonus. With all this being said, in the end it doesn’t really matter how “good” or “bad” your band is! This POINT of this cool thing is for people to work with other people to make something bigger than themselves. Even if you don’t know how to play an instrument very well, go in with the intention of learning as well as having fun or making something really weird, different or somehow inspiring. Everyone needs a little spice in their life, including you! So branch out! Go to Dumb Records today and enter into the 2016 Band lotto!

Wow, how could we miss telling you all about this show until just now? This is going to be a great one, and it’s happening in just a little less than one week! We have the return of Kevin Seconds– the front person of legendary punk band 7 Seconds (active since 1980) returning to Black Sheep. Kevin is currently an acoustic singer/songwriter and did perform at Black Sheep years ago in 2011. It seems pretty fitting that we also have Jeff Williams (of Springfield legendary punk band NIL8) also doing a solo set on this show. Catch a rare set of Jeff performing some stripped down NIL8 songs. Before that we have Austin Connelly of the current legendary Springfield punk band GRINN. Will Austin be performing some acoustic GRINN songs? We’ll see. Opening things up we have some of Decatur’s best acoustic emo jams with Spooky Poo.

This show will start 7:00 pm (that’s next Tuesday!) and admission is $8. You can find a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up at Black Sheep in September.

Metal Show Tonight at Black Sheep + Comedy Show at Dumb Records

momdo.jpg

Let’s face it- in this town you’re either into metal and metal shows, or you’re into comedy and having a good laugh, OR you’re into both. There isn’t anybody out there who dislikes both, right? So tonight we definitely have something for everybody happening in Southtown with a metal show starting at 7:00 pm inside Black Sheep and a comedy show starting at 9:00 pm inside Dumb Records.

Happening first is a five band metal show at Black Sheep featuring The Convalescence from Toledo, Ohio and who are no strangers to Black Sheep. This time around they will be bringing a touring package including Apothica from Houston, Texas. Then we also have a band on tour called Dead Eyes Always Dreaming from Kalamazoo, Michigan. You can check out some of their music streaming on the player below. All of this will come with local support from Through Burning Eyes (from around here), and Grays Divide (from Decatur). This show will start right at 7:00 pm and you can check it out for $10. Find a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a complete look at everything coming up at Black Sheep in the next few weeks.

Then inside Dumb Records we will be hosting a few comedians in the store as the metal show next door in Black Sheep is coming to a close. The comedians on deck include Dan Alten from Bloomington, Indiana and Eric Sorgel from Nashville, TN- both of which did a comedy/hardcore split show with Diaper Rash at one point a little over a year ago. It was a good time. This time around we have Brandon Judd, comedian from St. Louis opening things up for them, and also possibly a little bit by Devon Fluelen? The comedy show will be likely starting inside Dumb Records around 9:00 pm. We are taking $5 donations for the touring comedians. You can check out a facebook event for this one right here.

Operation Dumb Elephant: Update!

tumblr_ochmey4zi91sj9f9fo1_1280

Some of you might be wondering the status on our Operation Dumb Elephant project that we announced earlier this summer for Dumb Records. Well, we can tell you that the project has been nearly a complete success so far as we were able to purchase the life-sized elephant. An attempt was made to move the elephant into the Miles T Shirts warehouse last week, which was unsuccessful due to the elephant being just about one foot too tall. Check out a video of that process below. The elephant is currently sitting back at the autobody shop, and a big move will probably take place next month getting it in the open lot next to Dumb Records. Stay tuned for more information on that. Also if you pre-ordered a Dumb Records Elephant shirt we will be in touch with you about getting those mailed out or picked up in the record store!

Videos: Moondead at Black Sheep Fest 8-6-16

bxsfest15.jpg

Today we are bringing you a video of Springfield three-piece band Moondead performing at Black Sheep Fest 2016, which took place on August 6th earlier this month. You can check out the video below, and expect maybe one or two more videos from Black Sheep fest very soon. Check out a bunch of photos taken of the fest right here.

Moondead currently do not have any shows lined up at Black Sheep, but you can stay tuned for more September show announcements. Check out more videos and pictures taken at Black Sheep over the years on our vids/pics page.

Looks like we got one of those five-band punk shows happening at Black Sheep just one week from today. (Sorry we are still behind on our show announcements here and catching up)! This one features heavy hardcore band Bruise from Indiana, whose music you can find streaming on the player below. Also on tour and on the bill for this show is Short Leash from Michigan. Then we even have a third out of state band, and that is “Hanging Moon” from Nashville, Tennessee. All of this will be joined with local support from the Springfield party girl band GUSH.

This show will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. You can check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also check out our shows page for a look at what else is coming up this September at Black Sheep.

You wouldn’t believe it, but we are announcing a 15-band hardcore festival to be happening at Black Sheep in just six days, this upcoming Saturday, September 3rd. That’s right- this one isn’t really last minute on our part- the festival just had to be moved from happening in Champaign/Urbana to Black Sheep recently. We are happy to be now hosting the first “Central Illinois Hardcore Festival” featuring 15 bands from all over the region. Let’s take a look at the lineup:

No Surrender
Burdened
Mended
Capitol Offense
The Brandon Rosa Boombox Experience
Open Wound
Mercy Blow
Sledge
Reaver
Breach
Reduced To Instinct
Cold Grip
Lowered A.D.
Lowlives
Through N Through
Drowning

There you have it! Some of those bands of course are familiar to the Black Sheep stage such as Lowered A.D. and Reduced To Instinct, who have both played Dumb Fests of the past. You can check out music from Ohio’s “No Surrender” embedded below. The festival is set to be starting at noon on Saturday. Admission is $10. You can find a facebook event for the fest right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a look at what else is coming up at Black Sheep this September.
