a1873899391_10.jpg

We don’t post about new hip hop releases coming out of the 217 too often, so we definitely think it’s necessary to tell you about this newest release coming from local artist “Deezy Da Paperboy” who has performed a number of times at Black Sheep. Deezy also won the Illinois Times voting category last year for best hip hop artist coming out of Springfield. He may be currently based out of Decatur according to his bandcamp page however(?) Today we bring you a brand new album from Deezy Da Paperboy called Under Ground Krown Volume One. You can find it streaming on the player below. Head over to the bandcamp page to download the album for free.

There are currently no hip hop shows lined up at Black Sheep featuring Deezy Da Ppaerboy – there may be some other ones in the works though! Follow 217hiphop on facebook for more local hip hop news.

Oh man, have we announced this show yet? We don’t think so? Anyways, this one is happening one week from today on Saturday, August 19th and it features a whopping six metal bands for one mega show. This will be right in the middle of 5 shows in a row for us as one end of the summer mega blow-out! The big one on this bill is “Death Card” hardcore metal band from Nashville, Tennessee. Stream one of their songs on the player embedded below. Death Card is touring with a three band touring package which also includes “Rig Time!” from Wisconsin. Get ready for lots of rigs. Also on that tour is Barren from Arkansas. This time around we have local support from three other bands including Polterguts from St. Louis. We also have “A Treachery Untold” and “The City, The Ruins” opening things up both from the Central Illinois area.

This show will be starting promptly at 6:00 pm, doors are at 5:00 pm. Show admission is $8. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up at Black Sheep in the near future! Back to school season it is!

Tonight at Black Sheep: It’s Me Ross, Bottom Bracket, Special Death, Rella

jazzbottomb_big_2web

Tonight happening at Black Sheep it’s our only show of the weekend and the one that this jazzy flier is all about! Tonight we have the rock n’ roll band “It’s Me: Ross” returning from Columbia, Missouri after last playing in Springfield at Cafe Andiamo earlier this summer as part of Dumb Fe5t. Stream their latest album on the player below. Another out of town act is “Special Death” – which is a new Chicago-based project featuring Kyle Lang of the project Easter which performed at Black Sheep a few times years ago if anyone remembers them. A slight change to the lineup here since we first announced the show – instead of Stick People we now have Clare Frachey’s solo project Rella opening up the show. Bottom Bracket is still on board and will probably be closing the night out.

This show will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at everything else coming up at Black Sheep in the near future!

Southtown Sound August Studio Update!

18839695_1333429503431677_1828595582456033021_o.jpg

Some of around Black Sheep and Southtown may be wondering what all Southtown Sound, the new recording studio in our neighborhood has been up to this summer. A lot of you may notice the lights on up there late at night or hear lots of music coming from up in the studio and not really know who is up there recording! Today we have a big update with a full description of all of the projects the new studio has been working on this summer, and when we can expect to hear a lot of those big projects.

Hello all! As some of you may have noticed, we’ve been playing a little catch up with social media. First and foremost, I (Kyle) am happy to report that I have recently left my day job, and am pursuing the studio full time. For anyone who has had trouble booking time, please forgive us while we switch gears and catch up with some outstanding projects. We have a lot of exciting projects we’ve been working on that we are very excited to share with you all. In this update, I’ll touch on new releases, current projects, new and upcoming ones, and finally some updates to studio operation, availability, and booking. We’re looking at making monthly updates depending on how much we have to share, so keep your eyes peeled for more news in the future. With that being said, let’s move on to the music!

As some of you may have already seen, the Dumb Fe5t Compilation is finally live and we have been blown away by the response thus far. If you haven’t given it a listen yet, you can do so here.

We recently did a demo for hardcore/punk project Small Man, which you can check out here.

After Dumb Fe5t, we spent a weekend with the members of TOOMS tracking for their debut release (which is currently in the editing/mixing phase) as well as their eclectic indie/folk outfit Adventure Medical Kit which you can check out here.

Now looking forward here are a few full production projects we have cooking!

Some of you may recall Stick People (FKA Stems) were the first band to officially make a record with us! We also mastered a couple singles for them (Tracked & Mixed by Kevin Carman of Track 5 Productions) which you can check out at their bandcamp. The recordings we’ve made have been wrapped up for some time, and they are currently preparing to promote and release their EP. The details have yet to be confirmed, so head on over to their Facebook page for updates as they arise!

After MANY months of work (preproduction, writing, refining) we are so stoked to say that the Bottom Bracket EP has officially left the tracking stage, and is moving on the edits and mixing. Furthermore, we are lucky to have the incredibly talented (and good looking) Adam Cichocki from Timber Studios on mastering duty. While details are still being confirmed, you can expect this to be released sometime in September!

Another early adopter is the band White Gate from Clinton, IL who we have just recently been able to get into the studio for a single. I broke into recording with metalcore, so this project has had me waxing nostalgic. It’s been a blast being able to exercise a different approach, and you can expect to hear the finished product soon, as we are waiting for some additional stems to finish this out!

Finally, let’s move on to some recent and upcoming projects that you can expect to see in the coming weeks and months!

We were recently blessed to have Aviator (MA) stop by the studio and give us an INCREDBLE performance of two songs off their brand spanking new full length: “Loneliness Leaves the Light on for Me” (No Sleep Records). The video for this session was of course directed by none other than Veronica Mullen, with Isaac Arms assisting. While we are not looking to become live session centric* (in the capacity of Little Elephant or Audiotree), we have an incredible team and I am so grateful and humbled to be working with them as much as I have. Keep your eyes peeled for this session in the next month or so!

*If you are interested in booking a live session, feel free to contact us for a quote, at least a month in advance if possible.

If you have not checked out the Dumb Fe5t comp in its entirety, then do yourself a favor and be sure to check out the track from Springfield natives Spell Breaker. At the time of this post, we will be recording a demo that I know will knock off many a pair of socks. This band is an absolute power house and is going to take Springfield by storm, mark my words! You can check out their track from the Dumb Comp here.

Ghoul Jr.: This week we will also be working with Ghoul Jr. from Champaign on their debut EP. If you haven’t had to chance to see them at their stomping grounds (Blips and Chitz), they are a lo-fi/grunge project influenced by bands like Yuck, Pity Sex, & Weezer. From our conversations, this is looking to be a very exciting project and I can’t wait to work with them!

Lastly, just some final notes about studio operation and availability. As I mentioned earlier, I have shifted to full time and will be spending the next few weeks getting caught up and acclimated. If you would like to book some time with us, late August and forward has plenty of availability. Please forward all booking inquiries to our email: SouthtownSoundRecording@gmail.com. We will do our very best to accommodate you and help you figure out how to bring your music to life!

Thank you all so much for your patience and support. We will continue to work our collective butts off to change the way artists think about the recording process. From the heart, I hope you have an incredible day!

– Kyle (Southtown Sound Head Engineer)

12YEARSHOW_web.jpg

Today we have a fun and happy show to tell you about happening next month at Black Sheep! It’s our 12 year anniversary show happening on Saturday, September 16th, celebrating a whole entire dozen years of Black Sheep as an all ages music venue in Springfield starting in 2005. It’s been a wild ride, but we’ve made it this far and plan on keeping on for as long as we can! Check out our Black Sheep history page with a lot of important dates right here.

This show will also be an important one because it is going to be the CD release shows for both Stick People and Bottom Bracket. Expect some sneak peaks from those EPs/albums sometime between now and this show! Also playing this special show is our old friends Sammy & The Punk who have been rocking and rolling in the city for a few years now. Also Prowess, the fart bomb punk band, and Kate Ridge (or Kate Laine) – wonderful acoustic solo act.

Our Website 5 Years Old Today

BLACKSHEEP_spring16_1.jpg

Could you believe it, our website – blacksheepspringfield.com was launched on this very date exactly five years ago (August 7th, 2012). At that point the very idea of a record store, recording studio, Dumb Fest, and many other project had not even been born yet. Check out our Black Sheep history page to see more of a timeline on how much we’ve come along over the years. Here’s to another five more years of pumping out more content on Springfield local music and shows!

Thanks to all who came out to Black Sheep Fest this past weekend! We’ll be back later tonight with an announcement for a Black Sheep 12 year anniversary show in September!

Blacks, Whites, and Blues Festival Happening Saturday and Sunday in Southtown

20158009_253207181837962_7441079042087259918_o.jpg

Our Neighbors across the street at Bourbon Street Rhythm and Ribs put on an annual festival at the end of the summer every year. This year they are stepping it up a notch and are teaming up with a new organization to host “Blacks, Whites, & Blues Festival” – an annual festival focusing on “providing the community with information on education, career opportunities, health and safety while showcasing local talents in entertainment.”

Yes, Blacks, Whites, & Blues Festival will be going on at the same time as Black Sheep Fest happening tomorrow – which isn’t that bad because this means you can check out both events! There will also be plenty of food for sale at Blacks, Whites, and Blues Festival. One downside though is that 11th street will be closed off in front of our direct lot, limiting access to our Black Sheep parking lot. Bands playing Black Sheep Fest will have to come in to our lot through the alley!

Some of the band schedule for Black, White, and Blues Festival can be seen on their website right here. Their festival also features a car show, games and activities, and more. Southtown Construction and Training and Bone L.L.C. across the street from Dumb Records are also involved as a sponsor. So this weekend the whole neighborhood has something going on!

Check out a facebook event for Blacks, Whites, & Blues Festival right here.
