Last weekend Black Sheep had our big 9-year anniversary show and it was a great time to get together and celebrate nine years as Black Sheep being around as an all ages space in Springfield. Band that played include Asthma, Loses The Mighty, HK47, and Caterpillar Club. HK47 played their first show at Black Sheep in what might have been over five years. Today we have a batch of photos to show you from the event, thanks to AJWF Photography. You can check a few of them out above and below or head over to our 9-Year Anniversary Show album on our flickr page.

Black Sheep is now on it’s tenth year of being an all ages space in Springfield. You can expect some new features on the site to highlight all ten years shortly.

Lumpy & The Dumpers: Spaghetti Pit @ Black Sheep

spaghetti1

On Friday, September 5th Black Sheep saw a mess like one there has never been before. Some sticky culprits somehow managed to sneak pockets full of green spaghetti into the show, and the spaghetti made an appearance while Lumpy & The Dumpers were trying to perform on stage. We have not yet caught whoever did this, but our forensics team is hot on a trail of clues right now and will be sure to catch the spaghetti havoc-causers. Today we do have a good batch of photos and a video from the spaghetti-pit that broke out during the Lumpy & The Dumpers set. You can check those out above and below, or find some more on our flickr photo stream.

Earlier this month we hosted our very first Black Sheep Band Lotto and the event ended up being an outstanding success, with ten bands performing very solid and interesting sets. Back in May, 53 volunteers put their name into a box in which 12 bands of 4-5 people were drawn. Four of the bands ended up combining resulting in 10 bands that all performed in some way or another at the Band Lotto Show last weekend. The night began at 7:00 with a ten-piece jazz ensemble and ended after 11:00 in South Town Studio with a secret set from one of the bands.

You can find some pictures from that night below, or head over to our Black Sheep Band Lotto flickr album right here. Thanks to photographer AJ Francis for all of the great pictures. If you missed this year’s band lotto, it looks like one of the bands has gone on to continue playing other shows going by the name “Teen Freak.” The new band will be playing their next show at Black Sheep on Thursday, September 18th along with F///\\\M, Secret Tombs, and JAG. The next big Black Sheep event will be our nine-year anniversary show happening on Saturday, September 13th.

Anyone who was there knows that Black Sheep Fest 2014 was an extremely wild time. It was the most action-packed Black Sheep Fest we’ve had yet with a total of 23 bands (including surprise sets by F///\\\M and Nighthawk), and also an extremely rowdy crowd. Today we are bringing you photos of the day-long festival which took place this past Saturday. You can find a few of those photos below or you can head over to our Black Sheep Fest 2014 album on flickr. Also head over to our flickr page to see more show photos and other albums for other festivals of the past.

Dumb Fest 2 Coverage In Symphonic Magazine and Punktastic

GAS_RAG

Dumb Fest 2 may have been over one month ago already, but the rest of the internet is not about to be done talking about how great of a time it was. Thanks to Dumb Fest 2 photographers Priten Vora and Franklin Wallace, photos of Dumb Fest 2 got out there and the Springfield-based punk festival is being noticed in a few online publications.

Online based music magazine Symphonic Magazine had a few pages dedicated to the fest in the most recent issue. You can find issue 10 of Symphonic Magazine right here, and be sure to skip ahead to pages 16-17 where you can read a write-up of Dumb Fest 2 and also find a few photos. From the write-up (by Priten):

Dumb Fest serves as an eye-opening reminder about why it’s so crucial to keep supporting local music scenes. Small, local shows and festivals have a very unique atmosphere about them. They are far more intimate than most concerts, and they have an easygoing freedom about them that is extremely rare to see at larger festivals and venues. There are no security guards, no barriers, and no real restrictions. The organizers choose to trust people to regulate themselves, and the local community responds by not letting them down. Dumb Fest hits a sweet spot when it combines the efficiency needed to run events like this with the ability to give showgoers the sense of free dome to do whatever they want, and I look forward to attending more for many years to come.

Aside from Symphonic Magazine, popular punk and indie photo site Punktastic also featured a gallery of photos taken by Franklin Wallace of Dumb Fest 2. If you like the photo pictured above, you might want to check the rest of them out right here. We are also constantly adding to our Dumb Fest 2 photo album on flickr. You can find that album right here. Don’t forget that we are also hosting Black Sheep Fest this Saturday.

Screen shot 2014-04-20 at 4.05.26 PM

This past Saturday was a big day for Southtown. Dumb Records had our first every Record Store Day, there was a total of three shows at Dumb and Black Sheep where 13 bands played, and we welcomed a new business (Empire Board Shop) to the Southtown neighborhood. We want thank everyone who came out or participated in Record Store Day and for making it a success. We look forward to an even bigger Record Store Day next year. We did manage to capture a few pictures of that day, which you can find a few of above and below. Also head over to the Black Sheep flickr page, where you can find more Dumb photos on our Dumb Records flickr album.

This February our biggest show at Black Sheep ended up being the one on Sunday, February 23rd. The show featured Our Lady, Run Forever, Cloakroom, Looming, and even had a wild and unexpected set from a new Springfield band called Mouthsex. Thanks to a few photographers that were at the show, we have gathered an album of photos from the show which we now have on our flickr page. Extra special thanks to out of towner photographers AJ Francis and Adam Brumback for taking photos of the show.

You can check out our 2/23/14 at Black Sheep flickr set and see all of the photos  right here.

Photos: 2-8 at Dumb Records

DSCN5500A couple of weekends ago we had an acoustic show lined up at Black Sheep that we ended up moving next door to Dumb Records just for the heck of it. The show ended up being a lot of fun in the cozy record store. Today we are bringing you a few photos from the show. We have photos of sets from Rella and Dustin Sendejas of The Transatlantic. You can check all of those out on our flickr photostream or right here in the Dumb Records flickr group.

If you have not yet gotten the chance to check out Dumb Records, the store is open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm nights there are shows. The store is located at 1107 South Grand Avenue right next to Black Sheep.

Photos: Dumb Records Grand Opening

IMG_8272We have been all about the Dumb lately here at blacksheepspringfield.com. Of course if you have not heard, there is a new record store called Dumb Records that recently opened up right next to Black Sheep. It is ran by some of the same folks who help make Black Sheep and Error Records possible. This past Saturday Dumb Records had their grand opening celebration, including some live acoustic acts and an art show next door at The Black Sheep. Today we are bringing you some photos from that day. Check a few of them out above and below, or click the link below to find the whole set of photos.
