Happening right after the New Years Eve Show downtown (coming up this Saturday), things are going to get real heavy over on the ramp of Skank Skates. That’s right- we are bringing you a late night 4-band hardcore show to bring in the new year right around midnight. This show is starting roughly at 10:00 pm over on the ramp, or whenever we are ready after the show downtown is over and the PA is transferred over to the ramp. For this one we have intergalactic takeover band, Starlorde. We also have the mean and nasty Decatur hardcore band, Capitol Offense. The touring act on this bill is “War Prayer” from Minneapolis (pictured above). You can find some of their tunes on the player below. Opening things up is the angry band GRINN.

This show again will start roughly at 10:00 pm and go into the new year. We will be collecting $5 for the touring act. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what’s coming up for us in 2017.

We can’t believe it, have we really not yet announced our big plans for New Years Eve? Yeesh! For 2017 we promise to be a little more on top of things here at blacksheepspringfield.com. We have some big news for New Years Eve this year- there are no shows happening at Black Sheep, BUT we are teaming up this year with the downtown First Night Event to bring you a very special all ages show taking place downtown! The show is happening in a space located at 314 E Monroe St which is usually Kari Bedford Photography. This is part of the Springfield Art Council‘s Big “First Night” event, and you can find more information on that right here. Let’s take a look at who’s playing our show! We have SAP – and little rumor has it that instead of SAP it’s going to be continuing band lotto band “Lincoln’s Tomb” playing. We also have the Taylorville band Stems performing. Up before that is Mark Lee Reynolds or “MLR”. You can find some of Mark’s new music streaming on the player below. Opening things up is the solo performer Kate Ridge.

That show will start downtown right at 7:00 pm. We will be taking a break at 8:00 to enjoy the fireworks happening downtown, how nice! Admission this one is $5 for ages 17 and under and $10 for ages 18 and up (sorry). Check out a facebook event for this one right here. More information on an aftershow happening at Skank Skates coming later today!

bigreleases

Come on people! Come on! The year 2016 is drawing to a close and today is the last day to participate in our year end Springfield music poll where we ask you your favorite local albums, songs, and shows of the year. *Note: the only category you have to fill in is for the releases! You don’t have to be a Springfield-music whiz kid to participate in the poll!

The deadline for participating in this is this afternoon at 3:33 pm. Go vote in the poll right here! And tell your friends to vote too!

We will be putting up the results of the top ten from each category (hopefully) starting this Thursday the 29th, and going in to the 30th and 31st featuring different write ups by local musicians, artists, and those involved in our community. We are excited to highlight things that happened for us in 2016 and also bring on a new year!

Black Sheep Open Mic on December 30th

openmicflier_2.jpg

We all had a great time at the Black Sheep Holiday Show last night, and great seeing Brandon Carnes rock it with his big F*&#///\\\Mountain project once again. Now it’s time for us to tell you about the next show we have coming up at Black Sheep- it’s an open mic happening next weekend. This open mic is already jam packed with artists and musicians. It starts at 6:00 pm and goes until 9:00 pm so that some of us can get over to a show at Bar None later that night. Let’s take a look at the schedule:

8:45 – 9:00 = Nighthawk
8:30 – 8:45 = DB Cooper
8:15 – 8:30 = Ian Winterbauer
8:00 – 8:15 = Zach Goriszewski
7:45 – 8:00 = Jeff Williams
7:30 – 7:45 = Nathan Powers
7:15 – 7:30 = Jessica Knight
7:00 – 7:15 = Jordan Durham
6:45 – 7:00 = Heptanes
6:30 – 6:45 = (keeping open to be claimed at the show)
6:15 – 6:30 = Emma Wilson
6:00 – 6:15 = Andrew Marshall

Wow! As you can see, looks like this open mic has turned into a solid show. Featuring Emma Wilson who was recently our guest on The Black Sheep Radio Show, also Jeff Williams of NIL8, the return of Jessica Knight of Looming, hip hop from DB Cooper, and also closing with a rare on stage Nighthawk performance. We just have one slot left open to be claimed the day of the show.

The open mic starts right at 6:00 pm (early) and for admission we are just collecting donations of anywhere between one and five dollars. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at everything else coming up at Black Sheep in the near future.

Our good friend Jeremie Bailey who hangs out on the Dumb Records couch and does the creative content podcast and vlog – “Lincoln’s Legends” has recently featured a few interviews and videos worth noting! First one is an interview with Mario Cannamela of Southtown Sound– the new Southtown recording studio that is launching early 2017 if everything goes as planned with their kickstarter campaign. You can check out that video interview below. For those of you who do not know, the Black Sheep Holiday Show happening tonight is also a benefit for the new studio.

The second video below that is a walkthrough of Downtown Springfield Inc.‘s “Holiday Walks” featuring Downtown Springfield director Lisa Stott. Also in the video you can spot a segment with a pop-up art shop on the old State Capitol Square put together by Clare Frachey of Black Sheep. You can find that video on the bottom. For more Lincoln’s Legend videos check out the Lincoln’s Legends youtube channel.

Black Sheep Holiday Show + Benefit for Southtown Sound Tonight

thanksdon

We have a very special night lined up in Southtown tonight! Tonight will be the annual Black Sheep Holiday Show! Bring that egg nog, hot chocolate, and Christmas cheer if you have any. If you don’t like any of that holiday or Christmas stuff you can come too. Tonight is going to be a great return of our friend Brandon Carnes and also a benefit for the new recording studio coming to Southtown – Southtown Sound. That’s right, tonight we have the one and only ambient solo project of Brandon: F///\\\M, whose music you can find streaming below. We also have the new hit Springfield indie/punk/pop band Attic Salt on the bill which we are excited about. Up before that is the incredible noise artist “Emasculate Regression.” Then opening things up we have the debut of a brand new Springfield band put together by Mario Cannamela- called “Roman Candle Drive By” or “Christmas Cannamela” or something like that.

This show will start at 7:00 pm and go quick so that some of us can get over to the NIL8 show happening at Bar None. Admission is $5 and a good portion of proceeds will be going towards with Southtown Sound kickstarter. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at everything else coming up at Black Sheep in the near future.

The Studio Show: Season 2 Finale

Screen Shot 2016-12-22 at 8.10.50 PM.png

As sad as we are to see the second season of The Studio Show come to an end so quickly- we have to also say that those of us at Black Sheep headquarters are BLOWN AWAY by this finale of another successful season of the Springfield-based web series. The Studio Show kicked off their first season at the beginning of this year and have since completed another season, featuring regular hosts Arlin and Keil interviewing and exploring local Springfield artists, musicians, and community events.

In the final episode, which totals a little over 37 minutes long, you can find a breathtaking segment of drone footage from all over Springfield (pictured above). Also interviews with representatives of Downtown Springfield Inc., and an interesting musical guest Jeff Williams of NIL8. Also catch some guest appearances by Jeremie Bailey of Lincoln’s Legends and also Brian Galecki again as a “Go-lacky.” Check out the new episode below, and also head over to The Studio Show’s Youtube Channel for all videos and past episodes.

Also notable is that The Illinois Times featured an article covering the show today which you can find right here. Also Rachel and Scott from The Scene covered The Studio Show on WUIS which you can listen to right here. Along with this season finale, it looks like The Studio Show team have announced they are putting the show on hold for some time and will likely be focusing efforts on different things in the future.

After much careful research on what was released in local Springfield music this year, we finally have our year end survey together for 2016! We came up with a grand total of 34 Springfield releases this year, which is much more than we had last year in 2015! Great job all of you creative artists and musicians out there! We’ve also included a suggestion box if you have any input on the types of things you want to see in 2017 around Southtown or on our website.

Check out that survey RIGHT HERE. We’ll be taking responses from now up until EDIT: 3:33 pm on the dot on Monday, December 26th.
