Tonight at Black Sheep: Dither: The DIY Sound (Documentary), Caterpillar Club, War Magic

1380320_10151942844100619_1065745078_nWow! Tonight at Black Sheep we are going to be trying something a little different. We will be having a documentary screening of a short 45 minute documentary called “Dither: The D.I.Y. Sound.” Dither can be described as “A documentary project on do it yourself music; heightening our sense of community and stimulating positive social change”. Sounds like a great film! Check out a preview of the documentary below. Aside from the showing tonight, there are also two bands playing! We have the shoegaze project Caterpillar Club. And we also have the two-piece dream folk band Wolf Luv.

All of this starts at 7:00 pm tonight and admission is $5. You should come and bring a friend. You can find a facebook event for the show right here. Also don’t forget to check out what else we have coming up at Black Sheep over on our shows page.

Illinois Times: Best Of Springfield 2013 (Results)

imagesBOS_ICON.16975.widea.1The day has finally come. The Illinois Times have posted the results to their annual “Best of” ballots. This year’s survey was longer than ever with 140 categories. This year there was a record breaking 12,000 voters. You can find the results for the Illinois Times Best of’s in this week’s issue of The Illinois Times or online in two parts here and here.

The music section in this year’s Best ofs was notably longer than it had been in previous years. This resulted in more bars, venues, and bands having the chance to get recognized. Black Sheep did win the category for “best all-ages music venue” so thank you all who voted for us! From the Illinois Times:

There was a little confusion in this category, with a strange mix of other places getting votes not generally considered “all-ages,” which really means “under-21.” But the only joint that allows all ages, all the time and features music geared toward those ages, is the Black Sheep Cafe. Besides the fact the guys running this place (it is not a cafe and does’t serve food) do all the work with no care for profit, it’s great to have a venue that doesn’t feature booze first and music second. Along with the day-to-day workings of the seven-year-old venue, the influence upon the local scene is immeasurable, as having a place to play regularly and to see other bands of your ilk allows an increase in our local band population and creativity. So thank the BSC for that, too, while we award them for having a terrific all-ages venue.

Other bands and musicians that were winners in different categories include NIL8, Our Lady, Brushville, Gypsy Collabo, Catain Geech & The Shrimp Shack Shooters, Novocaine, Hipbone Sam, and a few others. To skip ahead to the music section of the best ofs, go here.

Our next show is this Saturday, where we will be showing a screening of the documentary Dither: The DIY Sound. We will also have performances by Springfield bands War Magic and Caterpillar Club. That’s at 7:00 pm Saturday and admission is $5 so see you then!

Springfield Food Cooperative Survey

1002298_536602706386963_1731020228_n

Back in around June there was a group of people that decided it would be a good idea to open a Cooperative Grocery Store here in Springfield!

A Cooperative Grocery Store is:
A community owned (anti-corporate) grocery store thats main drive is to support the local economy by buying goods from local farmers and growers. This means that this business will be completely independent from corporations and its inventory will be heavily composed of local goods from surrounding areas. It hires workers and functions democratically through people who join as members. Members are people who give money/time to the cooperative in order to help it grow, which is why it’s up to them as to what is sold and what is not. Basically, anyone can join and show support! This is an all around good idea.

Right now, they’re trying to get this project off the ground. Something they want everyone to do is to take this survey asking whether or not you think this would be a good idea! If you are interested in helping in any way, take the survey and fill in whatever contact information you wish. Check out the Dreaming of a Cooperative facebook page here for any more info!

The reason this pertains to Black Sheep is that we not only are committed to music, we’re also committed to D.I.Y. ethic as well as bettering the community we live in in any way possible. This food cooperative has both those elements and would be a really positive thing for Springfield, even if it doesn’t take off at first. If it had as many supporters as Black Sheep does it would for sure take flight, so try to help out if you can! Every little bit counts.

There were also plenty of spooky costumes. You can check out a few photos from Friday night below, or see them all on our Hobgob 2013 flickr group. Check out photos from more Black Sheep and Springfield shows on our Black Sheep flickr page. Extra thanks to all of the photographers (Cory VanMeter, AJ Francis, and Lizz Ortiz) who were taking photos that night. November 10th at Black Sheep: Looming (Acoustic), Perfect People, Who Needs You, Little Big Bangs, Aporia

DIGITAL CAMERAHere’s a show we’ve got coming up in a few weeks, it’s going to be swell! Looming will be bringing us an acoustic set produced by a few of its members. Come out to hear the acoustic versions of their feel-good, indie poprock tunes! Perfect People from St. Louis will have some hardcore punk tunes to keep things interesting for us after that, so make sure to check them out for sure. Who Needs You is another band we’ll be featuring at this show. This Indiana based band features pop-punk tunes that have a mellow and grounded feel, so they’re sure to give a rad set. Another St. Louis band other than Perfect People that will be in this show is Little Big Bangs. They’ve got a garagey quirk punk sound that’ll make you wanna hop around, so look forward to them! The last set we’ll be featuring is a local noise project called Aporia. It’s brutal in the best and rawest way so make sure to check out this show when it comes up!

It’ll be at 7pm on November 10th. The cost is $5 and you can find the facebook event here. Also, check out our upcoming shows to see what other stuff we have coming at us this November!

Paqui Added To Show on 11/7

1391971_10151964085750619_2060579846_nWe have a slight change-up to a show coming up on Thursday, November 7th that you all should know about! The show was originally supposed to feature Caterpillar Club, but they will be no longer playing. All of you Caterpillar Club fans shouldn’t worry! They will be playing the next show at Black Sheep on Saturday, November 2nd. Instead of Caterpillar Club, solo acoustic act Paqui will now be playing the show on November 7th. Hopefully his set doesn’t get taken over by Table Drama this time. The show will also feature Missouri shoegaze band Cantalouper (music below) and also Springfield two-piece band Mystery Gift

That show will still start at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. You can find a facebook event for that show right here. Also be sure to check out the other shows we have coming up this fall/winter at Black Sheep on our shows page!
