State Journal-Register: “Dumb Fest 6 Kicks Off Friday”

tumblr_p9ysb9u7pw1sj9f9fo1_1280.jpg

Thank you to all of our beautiful media coverage in this city about Dumb Fest and everything we do. Today featured on the front of the A&E section of The State Journal-Register, local paper, is the headlines “Dumb Fest 6 Kicks Off Friday” and a photo of the band Earth Witch playing at the very first Dumb Fest which occurred at Black Sheep five years ago now. Stephen Spearie wrote the article and interviewed the band Telephone Junkies and festival organizer Brian Galecki. A snippet from the article:

That was the case with the Buffalo, New York-based band Radiation Risks, which plays a gritty, hard-driving brand of rock-infused hardcore punk. It played a Black Sheep show in March, but when Galecki showed them around Southtown, including neighboring Skank Skates, another venue for the festival, they confirmed for Dumb Fest nearly on the spot, he said.

Galecki said he pursued Matrix after a three-and-a-half minute demo tape showed up on the internet.

Wow, it looks like things are really getting serious for The Black Sheep and the times we are in because today we made the front page of local paper The State Journal-Register with an article titled “All Ages Music Club Facing A Dark Time.” The article was written by Steven Spearie, who interviews co-owners Brian Galecki and BJ Pearce as well as NIL8 frontman Jeff Williams about Black Sheep. Pick up the Sunday paper at a gas station near you today for $3 or find the article online right here. From the article:

“We have a history, a culture in Springfield, a community that’s been around and we have stories to tell that can last a lifetime,” contended Pearce. ”(Black Sheep) is going to be around if people choose to attend shows.

“It’s a spot unlike anywhere else in the Midwest.”

We will also be holding a roundtable meeting inside Black Sheep at 7:00 pm tonight to further discuss topics going on in the article, and what’s next for us in these dark times.

State Journal-Register: “The Studio Show Is A Much-Needed Showcase For Young Local Artists”

AR-160129793

In today’s copy of local paper The State Journal-Register, there is a two-page article covering the newest Springfield-based talk show- The Studio Show. We have posted the two newest episodes of The Studio Show to our site- which feature local artists Jeff Williams and Clare Frachey, as well as music from Deep Hollow and Animals With Human Names. A third episode has even been released since then (which you can find embedded below) featuring local artist Jenni Kibbat, and also electronic project The Luzhin Defense who have performed at Black Sheep a number of times before.

From the article:

So far, the young talent on the show consists of people known to the production crew and hosts. As the show gains a larger audience, that will change. They are inviting talent to use the show’s email address (studioshow_4eva@hotmail.com) to make their pitch. And, says Keil, they won’t always stay in the studio (will they call it “The Out-of-Studio Show” then?)

“That’s what we’re excited about,” says Keil, “getting out more and filming in the community. That’s the ideal direction we want to go, to local businesses or an artist’s space where they are creating their art. When there are festivals, we may do a whole show outside and interact with people.”

Check out the full article in today’s copy of the State Journal-Register, or online right here. Also follow The Studio Show youtube channel for clips of shows, and full episodes released every other Wednesday.

State Journal-Register: “Springfield Band Looming Releases New Album”

AR-150819894

Some of you may have noticed an article on Looming in today’s A&E section of local paper The State Journal-Register. You can pick up a copy of the paper around town or find the whole article here. The article focuses on the band and also lyrical content of Looming’s new album, Nailbiter. From the article:

Looming started establishing itself as a part of the Springfield alternative and punk scene in the late summer of 2013. But soon after that, the band started to turn the heads of a wider audience.

In January, the band sent a demo to No Sleep Records, an independent label based out of Huntington Beach, California. No Sleep deals mostly with alternative bands with strong, local followings.

Don’t forget that Looming will be playing their big album release show at Black Sheep tomorrow night along with Park, Hidden Hospitals, and Choir Vandals. Today is the last day to pre-order tickets for that show either at Dumb Records or online right here.

State-Journal Register: Business Owners Working Together To Improve Southtown Neighborhood

AR-150629555Some of you may have noticed that Southtown has once again made the paper, this time we are in an article on the front page of the Sunday edition of the State-Journal Register! The article is called “Business Owners Working Together To Improve Southtown Neighborhood” and it is about the completion of Project Southtown’s Kickstarter campaign earlier this week. From the article:

A quiet renaissance has been underway at 11th Street and South Grand Avenue, and those who are behind it are forecasting even better days ahead for Springfield’s South Town.

A coalition of connected businesses that includes Skank Skates, the Black Sheep Cafe and Dumb Records, all located at that corner, are in the process of creating a nonprofit organization with an aim to better the neighborhood.

Also from the article:

Mike Farmer, the city’s planning and economic development director, emphasized the grant funds that have been spent on South Town projects but said that grant funding has been trending down over time.

“That’s certainly an area we want to continue to try to redevelop,” Farmer said. “There are some long-running businesses over there, and the idea is to put some energy into that area.”

Sinclair is optimistic about the city’s new leadership. He’s met with Mayor Jim Langfelder, who said he’d look into ways to resolve some of the parking issues for the businesses there.

Check out the full article on SJ-R.com right here, or by picking up today’s copy of the State-Journal Register. For those of you closely following Project Southtown, we will be having our next roundtable meeting on Sunday, July 5th at 7:00 pm inside Black Sheep and will be focusing a lot on the project. We will also be making our first big update on the project on this site at the beginning of the month, so be on the lookout for that.

State Journal Register: “DIY Music: Black Sheep Cafe Marks 10 Years”

tumblr_nnzc3es3zm1sj9f9fo1_1280

Southtown is in the news yet again, this time around we are the focus of this week’s A&E section of the State Journal Register. The article is called “DIY Music: Black Sheep Marks 10 Years, New Ownership As Alternative Music Venue.” The article talks about the venue and it’s ten years, as well as the recent ownership change with Kevin Bradford moving on to another project in town (which the article gives some more clues on what that is), as well as our Project Southtown Kickstarter campaign. The article interviews active members of the Southtown community Jessica Knight, Brian Galecki, and Brandon Carnes. From the article:

Few gave Black Sheep, which came out of the local punk scene, much of a chance a decade ago, given shifting musical tastes, the short shelf life of musical venues and its novel do-it-yourself concept that included a lack of any financial planning.

But an exploding local musical scene, fueled in part by Black Sheep’s own new recording studio, the insistence on a drug- and alcohol-free environment, an investment in the historic neighborhood and a smattering of national touring luminaries — Screaming Females, Ian McKaye (Fugazi, Minor Threat), ska punk godfather Jesse Michaels (Operation Ivy) and The Wonder Years — all have kept the place relevant and thriving.

Check out the full article by picking up today’s copy of The State Journal Register, or see an online version right here. Don’t forget that there are 49 days remaining in our Project Southtown Kickstarter and we haven’t reached our goal yet! You can find the link to donate to that right here.

State Journal Register: “Right Of Way Settlement Fast Tracks 11th Street Extension”

AR-150409746

We do not usually cover Springfield road extensions and City Council settlements on our site, but a recent article in Springfield paper The State Journal Register caught our attention. The article is on an 11th street extension in Springfield- which is being voted on in a City Council meeting today. Check out the full article right here. From the article:

The 11th Street extension would complete a corridor from Stevenson Drive to the University of Illinois Springfield begun nearly two decades ago. The final section between Stevenson and Lincolnshire Boulevard also would open a new route into the retail-commercial development anchored by the Wal-Mart off South Sixth Street.

Plans are for four traffic lanes and a turn lane, new intersections, a 10-foot-wide bike path on the west side of the extension, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and other improvements. The approximately half-mile section of construction begins at Cottonwood Street, just north of Stevenson, and extends to Lincolnshire.

Why is this big news for Black Sheep and Southtown? If everything goes as proposed, 11th street (running along the front side of Black Sheep) will become a straight shot to the college campuses in Springfield sometime by early 2016. This means Southtown will be an even shorter drive or bus/bike ride for all of the college students in Springfield once the extension is in effect, which of course is good news for all of us in Southtown.

State Journal Register: “One Man Band Bonanza Celebrates Musical Multitasking…”

Screen Shot 2015-03-14 at 9.20.30 AM

As you may know, The Black Sheep is hosting the second day of the One Man Band Bonanza happening around town here in Springfield this weekend. We have four one man band acts performing tonight, including acts from Wisconsin, Missouri, Texas, and even Mexico. Springfield paper The State-Journal Register recently did an article about the festival, and talked to coordinator Evan Mitchell about the fest. From the article:

Mitchell, of Taylorville, came up with the idea for the festival when two of his fellow musicians were looking to add a Springfield gig to their American tours. Inspiration soon took hold and Mitchell went to online sites where one-man bands are known to gather to see who else wanted to join the bill.

Over a dozen acts from around the country responded, along with ones from Mexico and Scotland.

You can check out the full article at SJ-R.com right here. Day 2 of the One Man Band Bonanza happens tonight at 7:00 pm at Black Sheep, and day 3 will be happening tomorrow at Homespun Republic. You can also find a short article in weekly publication The Illinois Times about the One Man Band Bonanza.
