Dumb Records Elephant Confirmed For Springfield Downtown Christmas Parade 2016

It’s hard to believe it, but the holidays are right around the corner and we do have a few things cooking up at Black Sheep / Dumb Records headquarters. Of course we will be hosting a holiday show at Black Sheep this year- to be announced soon. Tonight we are announcing that Dumb Records has been confirmed for the 2016 Springfield Jaycee’s Christmas Parade downtown. Yes, this does mean that we are taking the giant green elephant.

Fingers crossed that everything is going to go as planned for this- right now the plan is for the giant Dumb Records green elephant to be pulled by the Miles T Shirts van. Of course we also plan on covering the elephant in Christmas lights and will also have Nighthawk inside the elephant playing the electric guitar. The Christmas parade is held downtown on Saturday, November 26th (less than two weeks) from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Check out a facebook event for that right here.

Friday, December 2nd at Black Sheep: $1 Show

Continuing to try some new things here at Black Sheep- we are going to be kicking off the month of December here hard with a one dollar show happening on Friday, December 2nd. That’s right- a full five band show for only $1.00. That’s twenty cents a band. The lineup is all mostly local acts too. We have the brand new band Nagasaki on board which features members of Vonne and Starlorde. We also have the Peoria-based pop punk band Terribly Happy performing. Up before that is Animals With Human Names – a one man hip hop project that has started fairly recently in town that you may have not known about. Check out some Animals With Human Names streaming on the player below. We also have a couple of Black Sheep debuts for a couple of acts on this show. This includes “Famous Losers” from Jacksonville, Illinois. Then things are opening up with Kenyon D- local solo performer from the area.

Black Sheep Sponsoring “Teen Talent Showcase” Tonight at Boys and Girls Club

This weekend Black Sheep has gotten the chance to work with HISO Music and The Boys & Girls Club on another event benefiting the community. That is the “Teen Talent Showcase” happening tonight at The Boys & Girls Club on 300 South 15th Street. The event will be a talent showcase for younger musicians or those who haven’t yet gotten many opportunities to perform. Black Sheep co-owners Brian Galecki and Clare Frachey will be involved at this event as “judges” offering support. From the HISO page:

Tonight at Black Sheep: Toxic Womb, Gnargoyle, Starlorde, GRINN

We do have a show happening at Black Sheep tonight- it’s going to be a loud and angry punk/hardcore show so lookout! Now that we’ve made our statement about the election and where we stand on things it’s time to move forward into the rest of 2016 and 2017 stronger and harder than ever. Taking place tonight we have the band Toxic Womb from Columbus, Ohio. You can check out their debut tape streaming on the player below. We also have out of town act Gnargoyle from Champaign/Urbana on the bill! They recently just released a “shitty splitty” with the Springfield baby band Diaper Rash. Before that is the hardcore band from out of this world- Starlorde. And opening things up we have GRINN, who were just our guests on the Black Sheep Radio Show yesterday.

After holding off on website posts and music news these past few days, it is time for us to try and get back into the swing of things while still very much acknowledging how all of us are feeling after this past election. Today we have a great episode of The Black Sheep Radio Show lined up – with a special guest band, GRINN. GRINN will be playing the show at Black Sheep tomorrow night along with Toxic Womb, Gnargoyle, and Starlorde. We are excited to talk to them about what it is like to play in a band.

A Statement From Us

For the majority of our eleven year existence as an all ages show space in Springfield, The Black Sheep’s focus has always been music and art for all ages and not much more than that. We have refrained from getting too “political” because we have felt that existing as the only all ages show space in Springfield and as a means for people of all different backgrounds to express themselves is a strong statement in and of itself.

The results of this past election have us as well as many others in our community angered, disappointed, and some frightened as to what the future may hold. At this point it seems only appropriate for us to make some sort of statement to reiterate that we exist as an outlet of escape and expression for our community, and also that racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, or any thing of the sort are not tolerated or supported by our space. The owners of this venue and the people who support it always strive to help people feel safe and will continue to do so with even more passion and determination to the best of our abilities and beyond. We absolutely encourage open dialogue at all times, however the abhorrences listed above are absolutely unacceptable and will be acknowledged as such in any event that they are presented.

It seems as it is important now more than ever for our community to come together to support each other and also reach out to other communities that may be negatively effected by this year’s election and need an outlet such as our space to be heard. We will be organizing an event to make this possible on Sunday, December 4th. We want to feature music, art, speakers, and poetry from different backgrounds and give everyone a chance to be heard as well raise money for different charity organizations that need our help in this time.

Today we are bringing you a video of Chicago-based rock band Lume performing at Black Sheep late last month. The show was Our Lady’s final show also with Estates from Wisconsin and The Foxery from Kentucky. November 23rd at Bar None: The Timmys, Haddonfields, The Gunga Dins

We don’t usually cover the 21+ shows on our site, or too many shows outside of Black Sheep, but we figured this one coming up later this month at Bar None is very much worth mentioning! This 0ne is happening the night before Thanksgiving on Wednesday, November 23rd. It features another reunion by the former Springfield punk band The Gunga Dins, who have played a good number of reunion shows since their break up in the mid-2000’s. The last reunion show may have been during an Asylum reunion at a VFW a couple years that. Or it could have been Black Sheep Fest 2013. Who knows! You can stream some of the Gunga Din’s music on the player below. Also on this show is long running Springfield punk band The Timmys. Then coming from St. Louis is another punk band- The Haddonfields who have played at Black Sheep a number of times before.

December 3rd at Dumb Records: Doc Otis, Ragna Rye, Rabble Rouser Thing Band, Andy Krisak

It’s time for us to announce our next full band show happening inside record store Dumb Records, also our first show announcement for December! This one is happening on Saturday, December 3rd inside Dumb Records and features a good lineup of folk, blues, and Americana music. For this show we have traveling trio Doc Otis (pictured above) coming from St. Louis. Stream some of their music on the player below. We also have local Springfield folk duo Ragna Rye bringing the rock. Then we have another act from St. Louis and that is the Rabble Rouser Thing Band. Opening things up we have local solo act Andy Krisak.

That show will start at 7:00 pm and there is a strong suggested donation of $5. There is also a sale going on in the store for 20% off everything during the show!
