This week Pepperoni picked The Clash

“My pick this week is The Clash’s 1979 iconic album “London Calling.” You’ve all seen this album cover before. That’s actually bassist Paul Simonon smashing his bass at a show at the Palladium in New York in 1979. I’m more of a fan of The Clash’s good old fashioned punk rock in their first two albums – London Calling brought blending of reggae, new wave, and a few other things and is a tad slower than their earlier stuff. Highly influential though I’m sure and still one of the coolest album covers of all time. My favorite track on this one “Brand New Cadillac”

We’re also excited to finally have TV Girl records in our store after receiving requests for years from this elusive band. Hopefully more to come, too!

You Don’t Know About Moondog???

Starting to feel like we’re getting back into the swing of things this year with all the holidays behind us, the snow and frigid temperatures, and Brian going on a honey moon. I guess we do have a big hole in front of our store.

Let’s take a look at what Friday releases are ahead of us this week!

– THE WEEKND new album “Hurry Up Tomorrow” – his 6th studio album – just on black vinyl but it’s really cheap, like $19.98!?!? That’s almost unheard of for a new record now! This is a “secured release” so the big label is making sure we do not get it until some point during the day Friday so bear with us.
– MADVILLAIN “Madvillainy Demos” – one of the best selling albums here of all time is getting its demos released!
– RUSH have their later albums being re-issued to vinyl! Two that we are highlighting here are 1989’s “Presto” and 1991’s “Roll The Bones”
– STEELY DAN’s 1975 studio album “Katy Lied” getting re-issued for it’s 50th anniversary!

This week Pep picked Alvvays

“This week I am picking Canadian indie-pop band Alvvays’ 2014 self-titled album, “Alvvays”. This is one of those times where I am not picking an album because I know it’s going to hit the #1 year end top seller, no I am picking it because I truly believe that this album is so good that it needs to be in my record store on the shelves at all times. A record that everyone who works here can 100% agree on. Anyone ever comes in and asks me to recommend them an album that they can listen to that is good, right here it is. Look no further than Alvvays self-titled from 2014, it is all you need. And it’s released by Polvyinyl Records out of Champaign!”

I have permission to cuss if I need it

Over on the Facebook, we’ve been asking people if they can tell us about any past record stores that have existed in our town as we’ve been on a history kick lately. It started with trying to figure out all the music stores that have been at the mall and it’s expanded since then. This has prompted lots of discussion and we’ve been compiling a list of all the stores. I love this picture Kyle sent us of The Music Shop. I don’t know the year, probably 70s, but I just love the wood paneling. If only we could setup a store that looks like this! I’m not sure where we would get all that paneling. I would for sure wear my shirt tucked in all the time if I worked at a store like this and keep my pens in my shirt pocket.

Here are this Friday’s hot new vinyls!

– The PHISH re-issues continue, this time with their 1996 LP “Billy Breathes” on double “green trees” vinyl!
– TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS with the 1982 album “Long After Dark” being pressed on turquoise vinyl!
– Rock duo JAPANDROIDS have a new album, “Fate & Alcohol”
– TIM HEIDECKER of Tim & Eric fame has a new music album coming out called “SLIPPING AWAY” on exclusive teal vinyl.
– THE SPECIALS – their 1979 self titled album, actually being released on clear vinyl (sorry it’s black in the picture)
– AMERICAN FOOTBALL have a “Covers” record coming out?!?
– last but not least it’s CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING TIME, this time it’s on purple vinyl!

This week Pepperoni picked Sufjan Steven’s Carrie & Lowell

“It’s fall. As the weather gets colder and I put on my fall jacket I like to grab a cup of coffee, put in my earbuds connected to my 2008 ipod shuffle and get more in touch with my indie rock side. This is my second time picking a Sufjan Stevens album – Sufjan knows how to really deliver those face melting, balls-to-the-wall indie rock acoustic bangers. Listening to this just makes me want to mosh as softly as I can in my bedroom alone. “Carrie & Lowell” came out in 2015 – Sufjan had a realization he was never going to pull off writing a whole album for every single U.S. state and got extremely depressed because of this and locked himself in a wooden cabin for a full year. He finally came up with a solution and that was to write an album about his two parents instead, Carrie and Lowell. So that is what we got.”

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: This is one of my favorite records even tho I don’t listen to it often. It’s very impactful each listen and gives the listener the feelings. I don’t make it to big production shows often but I was very fortunate to have seen this live during the Carrie and Lowell tour which shall always be my favorite concert of all time. Hearing this performed live really gave it a new dimension as much more development happened on stage than could fit on this record. If you find the live album of this, it’s certainly worth it. During the encore Sufjan performed all his past hits and every adult over 35 stood up for Chicago.

You’re invited to Walk in the Parade With Us Saturday

2 hardcore shows are happening at our place this week plus we’re taking the elephant out to the St. Patrick’s day parade Saturday. We welcome all you St. Patricks Day Tourists who come in for your annual trip downtown to ask us if records are still around while you spill your drinks on them.

Thursday we have a hardcore show featuring Surfaced from Louisville, Out 4 Blood from Minneapolis, Blistered Spirit from St Louis and locals Subversion and Javelin.

Then on Saturday we have this other hardcore show featuring Gnaw from Missouri, Security Footage from Missouri, plus locals Prevention, War and Rumor, and Bruxism. Side note when I was at the downtown retailer meeting, they were asking if any of the stores were holding events. I think they were talking about sidewalk sales and wine tastings so I didn’t say anything.

On to Vinyl Release Friday!

– NOAH KAHAN with the “Cape Elizabeth EP”! This was a Record Store Day release for Black Friday this past year and in high demand. Well it’s back, baby.
– CAKE “Pressure Chief” – Cake re-issues been going down their discography and we are to their 5th album released in 2004
– KACEY MUSGRAVES with her 6th studio album “Deeper Well”
– BLACK CROWES have a new album “Happiness Bastards”
– A reissue of Sum 41’s 2019 album “Order In Decline”
– JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE has a brand new album “Everything I Thought It Was”

This week Pepperoni has picked Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season”

“This week I’ve picked an artist that sure has blown the heck up recently… Noah Kahan. With his album from last year, “Stick Season”. We had it when it came out, but around Christmas time everyone wanted it and it was out of print for a while, but now it’s back. Jeff says this guy just sounds like Mumford & Sons. His second album is also being released for Record Store Day and I can say that it’s what we ordered the most copies of.”
