Karaoke Night Tonight at Dumb Records + Bleeding Gums and Cohete

karaokeshoot

It’s time to get that dusty old karaoke machine up and running (for the first time) at Dumb Records tonight because we are trying new things and hosting a karaoke night, oh boy! We are kicking things off tonight in the record store with two touring bands, and then getting into the karaoke. Those bands are Bleeding Gums and Cohete from Chicago- both bringing the rock n’ roll and punk. Check out Cohete’s brand new tour tape on the player embedded below. Then after that we are going to dive into the karaoke which will be on a projector screen in the store. Anything goes, and anyone is welcome to participate.

Tonight inside Dumb Records starts at 7:30 pm. We are asking for $3 for the touring acts. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a look at everything coming up in Southtown this spring.

The Illinois Times: “Radical Theater Pushes Boundaries”

newsC.22707.jpg

We are excited to see more of our friends make it big to The Illinois Times once again- this time there is an article inside this week’s issue focusing on The Absurdist’s People Theatre – a newer DIY Theater Troupe based out of Springfield. Those of you may remember the theater troupe puttin gon a few performances of the play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe” inside Black Sheep this past summer. They are now gearing up for their second round of performances for the play “Gem of the Ocean” by August Wilson to happen at some point later this year inside of Black Sheep.

Self-described by founder and director Alex Martin as “DIY rogue theater,” Springfield’s  Absurdist People’s Theater Troupe would like nothing more than to shake things up in Springfield. “I went to Blackburn College and did theater for four years,” Martin said. “When I came back here to my home community and looked around at the different theater projects that were happening, I noticed that there wasn’t much of the kind of theater I’m interested in happening in the local theater community.” Instead of passively waiting for Springfield’s theater scene to change, Martin decided to create her own company. “I want to show people that there are other kinds of theater out there, instead of just the same musicals, the same plays again and again. I’d like to do plays that haven’t ever been produced here, newer stuff by newer playwrights.”

Check out the full article online right here, or pick up a copy of this week’s Illinois Times inside Dumb Records or other local businesses. Stay tuned on date announcements for “Gem of The Ocean” performances inside Black Sheep.

Abyss will be coming out with their new EP called Dreadnought (pictured above). Opening up for them is a few acts, one of them being the driving punk rock band Sammy & The Punk. Before that is the pop punk project Fill In The Blank who we have not seen in a minute. And opening things up is a band we have not seen an even longer time- Vacant Skies who are also apparently playing their last show as a band tonight.

Tonight the show starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at everything else we have coming up at Black Sheep in the near future.

Tonight’s the night for a big show happening at Black Sheep that we’ve been waiting quite some time for! Tonight we have Looming making a return to Springfield since last August- in town before they head to Texas for SXSW, after they made a stop in Chicago yesterday to record an Audiotree session. The band has also been hard at work on a new album. You can listen to the last recorded song they released on the player embedded below. The rest of this show is going to feature some wild & crazy punk acts. We have two other touring groups on the bill and those include “Erik Nervous” and “Spodee Boy” both from Michigan. Opening things up for this show on the big stage is the big time rock band Livin’ Thing.

Tonight the show will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $10 (since we have 3 touring bands to take care of). Surely this will be a gig not to miss. Check out a facebook event for this one right here, and also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at everything else coming up at Black Sheep later this year.

tettt.jpg

The new Southtown recording studio Southtown Sound has recently unleashed a very big update upon us all at the start of this month with how the renovations for their space has been coming along and also plans for a grand opening. You can see a picture of how things are looking in the main room of the studio above. A grand opening and studio debut is now scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 26th along with the Black Sheep Annual Art Show (which we will have announcement post coming for soon). There will also be a soft opening the night before on the 25th.

Check out the full new studio update on their kickstarter page right here. More info can be found there on getting incentives shipped out, and booking recording time in the new studio.
