This past Saturday was a big day for Southtown. Dumb Records had our first every Record Store Day, there was a total of three shows at Dumb and Black Sheep where 13 bands played, and we welcomed a new business (Empire Board Shop) to the Southtown neighborhood. We want thank everyone who came out or participated in Record Store Day and for making it a success. We look forward to an even bigger Record Store Day next year. We did manage to capture a few pictures of that day, which you can find a few of above and below. Also head over to the Black Sheep flickr page, where you can find more Dumb photos on our Dumb Records flickr album.

Today is a big big big BIG day for South Town with a LOT of stuff going on. Let’s talk about Dumb Records first. It is Record Store Day. Dumb Records is located on 1107 South Grand Ave and will be open today from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. Everything in the store is going to be 10% off. There will be TONS of new arrivals in store for this day. You can check out that long list of stuff right here.
Let’s move on to talk about Empire Board Shop. Empire Board Shop is the new skate shop that just moved in to South Town right above Dumb Records. Today will be their grand opening. They will be open from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm today. The shop has plenty of skateboarding merchandise, boards, and more cool hangout rooms with video games and foosball.
Okay let’s move on to the shows. There are THREE shows happening in South Town today. The first kicks off at 1:00 pm in Black Sheep. This is going to be a FREE show so you have no reason not to come. Bands playing that one are Built In A Day, War Magic, and Josh Catalano & The Dirty Thoughts.
The second show is taking place inside of Dumb Records. That show kicks off at 3:00 pm and is also free. The bands for this one are all acoustic. They are Cody Jones, Ted Keylon, Blind Social, Self Proclaimed Narcissist, and Randle Travis. We have a new store setup to accommodate the space for this show.
The last show and grand finale will be taking place inside of Black Sheep at 7:00 pm. This show is $5, and it will be worth it. Bands playing this one include Crab Legs from North Dakota, Say Something, Kickstart, F*CK///\\\MOUNTAIN, and Spoonboy from Washington DC.
That is a LOT going on. Check out a facebook event for all of that jazz right here. Also check our shows page to look at a TON of other shows that are coming up in the near future.
State Journal Register: “Record Store Day Events…”
Our local newspaper, The State Journal Register, has done a short article on Record Store Day events happening in Springfield this Saturday. This includes our big first ever Record Store Day at Dumb Records and Black Sheep, and also Record Store Day happening at Recycled Records downtown. From the article:
Since 2007, Independent Record Store Day has emphasized the importance of record stores — particularly as more people purchase music as digital downloads. On Record Store Day, a number of notable recording artists will release new music available only at participating record stores, and available only on vinyl discs (for those too young to remember, those are the large black discs that require a turntable to play).
Among the artists participating by releasing music on vinyl are David Bowie, fun., the Flaming Lips, Bruce Springsteen, Sharon Jones, MGMT and Green Day. The artists available at each store will vary, and only a few copies of each recording will be available.
You can find the full article by picking up a copy of today’s SJR and looking in the A&E section, or you can find it online right here. Don’t forget that at Dumb Records and Black Sheep this Saturday we will be having events all day long including THREE shows- one inside Black Sheep at 1:00 pm, one inside Dumb at 3:00 pm and one final show inside Black Sheep at 7:00 pm. Check out all of the bands playing those shows right here. You can also find our very long list of new arrivals we will have in the store right here. Don’t forget that everything in the store will also be 10% off! Recycled Records will also be hosting Record Store Day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm downtown. Their event will feature a live broadcast by 88.3 WQNA and also baked goods from Cafe Moxo.
