WUIS: The Scene’s Audio Doc: “10 Years Of Black Sheep Venue”

Rachel Otwell and Scott Faingold of WUIS’s “The Scene” have put together a 20-minute audio documentary covering The Black Sheep and us making it to ten years as an all ages venue in Springfield.

For this piece Rachel and Scott talked to a wide variety people from all different areas of Southtown including former Black Sheep owner and founder Kevin Bradford, Dumb Fest co-ordinator Brian Galecki, Project Southtown co-ordinator Clare Frachey, Sammy Flores of HISO Music, Mary Clay of Popeye’s Barbeque, Jess Knight of Looming, Bo Mellado of Asthma, and more. Each person talks about their role in Southtown, how the neighborhood and Black Sheep has effected them and what they do.

Error Records Featured In “Little Indie Big Rock” Mini Documentary

Our friends over at Error Records in Urbana, Illinois have recently been featured in a short mini-documentary called Little Indie, Big Rock, put together by “Thekidsareonfire“. The documentary takes a look at small venues and talks to different bands, fans, and venue owners. Nathan Landolt of Error Records is featured talking about Error Records’s role in the Champaign/Urbana music scene.

Error Records: Community Not Commodity

Today we are bringing you a neat little mini-documentary done on Champaign record store/all-ages venue and our friends Error Records. The documentary five minutes long and talks about DIY music and what Error Records is all about. You can check out the documentary right here.

The Black Sheep recently announced that we will be collaborating with Error Records to bring Dumb Records to Southtown Springfield sometime in early 2014. Be on the lookout for more news on that soon. Until then, remember “community NOT commodity.”

November 2nd at Black Sheep: Dither (Documentary Screening), Caterpillar Club, War Magic

1380320_10151942844100619_1065745078_nSome interesting stuff is going to be happening at Black Sheep at the beginning of November! We are having a show mixed with a screening of a new documentary and that is on Saturday, November 2nd! The documentary is called “Dither: The DIY Sound” and it is “A documentary project on do it yourself music; heightening our sense of community and stimulating positive social change”. Dither features clips from Skeletal Lightning Fest 2013, and interviews with Mark Sarich of the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center, Ian Mackaye of Dischord Records and Fugazi, and more. On top of the documentary showing, we are going to have a couple of bands play. We have shoegaze superstars Caterpillar Club playing and also dream pop experts War Magic.
