The Fart of July

This week we’re closed on the 4th of July but we got lots to do this weekend!

This Saturday we’re hosting a show with alt rock shoegaze Rain Garden from Chicago and local acts Ricki Marvel and Kate Laine

Here are this week’s Friday Releases
– GRATEFUL DEAD re-issues keep coming. This week “Reckoning” and “Dead Set” are being reissued on double black vinyl.
– IT WAS A SHORT SUMMER CHARLIE BROWN – they didn’t press nearly enough of these for RSD this past year, and now we were told the exclusive version that was coming out Friday was once again cancelled or delayed… however we should have a few black vinyl copies coming in.
– THE DECEMBERISTS reissues keep coming as well, this week it’s their 2005 album “Picaresque” on indie exclusive vinyl (we don’t know the exact color).
– EAGLES GREATEST HITS VOL 2 getting a 180g reissue. Hotel California is on this one, NOT their first greatest hits.
– THE ERGS 20th Anniversary pressing of “Dorkrockcorkrod” possibly the best pop punk album ever made, fight me!

This week Pepperoni picked the Descendents

“I DON’T WANT TO GROW UP! – The second studio album by 80’s punk group DESCENDENTS originally released in 1985. It’s silly, it’s catchy, some might even say Descendents were the first ever pop punk band and without them we wouldn’t have bands like Blink-182, Green Day, or Alkaline Trio!?”

Buckle Your Engines

We have a pinball named Dale now

This Friday’s new releases!
– JOHNNY CASH “Songwriter” – believe it or not this is actually an album of previously unreleased material Johnny Cash recorded in 1993 in Nashville.
– NATHANIEL RATELIFF & THE NIGHT SWEATS new album “South Of Here”, we should have on exclusive green and regular black vinyl.
– Hip hop artist LUPE FIASCO’s 9th studio album “Samurai”
– IMAGINE DRAGONS are here with a new EP of some sort called “Loom” and there are a couple of different variations with vinyl color ways and alternate artwork we are getting
– SPECIALS “More Specials” is getting re-issued from this 2nd wave British ska group, originally released in 1980.
– NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE “Early Daze” – a collection of rare and unreleased studio recordings from 1969 from this legendary group.
– LORD HURON “Strange Trails” – a reissue of this 2015 indie folk album on clear blue vinyl.
– CAMILA CABELLO “C, XOXO” the fourth studio album from singer songwriter, blue raspberry flavor.

This week Pepperoni chose RUSH

“It’s about time that I made a move on picking a RUSH album as a pick of the week! Any band that has their own pinball machine deserves a Pepperoni pick. This is their second album “Fly By Night”. I tell you what, it is harder and harder to come across this album used (original copies go for a lot), so I have decided it is time to stock up on the newer copies.”

Sad Days for Downtown

Yesterday was surreal. A building the next street over from us suffered a major fire and total loss of the building. Nobody was hurt but multiple businesses are affected. The spaces for the Cat’s Pyjamas, Electric Quill Tattoos, Elf Shelf, and the Moving Pillsbury Forward exhibit are gone. It sounds like the parking garage next door with offices and apartments is also heavily damaged. Other businesses next door are also impacted. It is unknown right now how much Cafe Moxo is affected as it sounds like they may have suffered damage. I just ate there the day before, one of my favorite downtown restaurants. Also the Wakery and Daisy Janes is reporting not opening today.

We always feel the more businesses downtown the better. The more there is to do, then more people are going to come check things out. This will certainly set all of this progress back. It’s a scary reminder how important fire safety is and how possible this could be us.

Here are this Friday’s releases:

– 24 year old indie pop singer GRACIE ABRAMS with her sophomore release “The Secret Of Us” available on indie exclusive and black vinyl.
– A 50th anniversary / remastering of GRATEFUL DEAD’s live album “From The Mars Motel”
– A ton of new re-issues from 2000’s pop punk queen AVRIL LAVIGNE – the ones we chose to stock up the most on are “Under My Skin” and “Let Go”.
– A few people have been asking about “PETTY COUNTRY” an all-country artist tribute double-album all of Tom Petty covers. Should be here on black and indie exclusive vinyl.

This week Pepperoni picked the Dead Kennedys

“Certified classic. Essential 1980 California punk. It’s fun, it’s political, it’s surfy, even scary, it’s got guitar solos. The singer sounds like Daffy Duck if I close my eyes.”

Sometime in the next couple weeks or so we’re bringing something big to the Dumb Records Arcade!

I Bet That Pizza Tastes Good!

This week we went on a business trip to the Chicago suburbs. We picked up 2 pinball machines and visited the Volo Museum to see our favorite band, The Rock-afire Explosion!

Speaking of bands, here are some playing our place on Friday! We have punk band Kids from St Louis and local psych metal Acid Fog, folk punkers Yardwaste, and solo artist Whitney Divine.

Here are this Friday’s new releases!

– TWILIGHT SOUNDTRACKS. For the first one and “New Moon” (is that the second movie?). Looks like silver and gold exclusive vinyl.
– DAVID BOWIE with “Rock N’ Roll Star” – alternate mixes from the Ziggy Stardust sessions, on black vinyl.
– A new album from THE DECEMBERISTS called “And So It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again” we should have indie exclusive vinyl.
– Re-issue of Seal’s 1991 self-titled album (featuring Kiss From A Rose), on double black LP.

This week Pepperoni has picked Diamond Dogs

“It’s about time we had another David Bowie pick around here. This was Bowie’s 8th studio album “Diamond Dogs” released 50 years ago in 1974. You may recognize the glam-rock hit “Rebel Rebel” which was the first single off this album. Something, something, something “Diamond Cats” haha ha ha?”

Oh and we had another new billboard go up recently with a completely different design.

Star Wars Elephant Baseball

Last Friday we all went to Robin Roberts stadium to see the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes take on the Normal Cornbelters. And I’d say they belted us pretty good at 14-0. It was also Star Wars night so they were handing out lightsabres! Plus we saw some really great Stars Wars characters walking around during the game. It seems the Horseshoes are off to a bad start this year but the games are still fun to attend!

Here are your Friday releases this week!
– The 7th album from PEDRO THE LION “Santa Cruz” out on exclusive green vinyl… this guy played at Jeff’s house once.
– THE CURE compilation album “Japanese Whispers” being re-issued on a double LP!
– A number of reissues from country artist DWIGHT YOAKAM which had been extremely hard to come by before now, we chose to stock up on and highlight “Hillbilly Deluxe”
– It had already gotten pushed back, but BAD BUNNY & THE WEEKEND with a really long album title that looks like a western soundtrack.
– Big release for “CHARLI XCX” with her new album “Brat” which features really pixelated artwork on purpose because it’s a vibe, on exclusive pink splatter vinyl

This week Pepperoni picked this Greta album.

“My pick this week is the 2018 debut album from Michigan rock group Greta Van Fleet, “Anthem Of The Peaceful Army”. Hey wait a minute this kid sounds just like Led Zeppelin?? Who does he think he is!? Anyways, I wanted to be stocked up on this album so that we will be ready for the next time this band goes viral on Tik Tok.”

Saturday we’re hosting this loud hardcore show featuring Dry Socket from Portland OR, Blight Future from St Louis, and local loud bands Payasa, Propoganda, and Worldview.

Losing is Dumb

Kind of a quieter weekend coming up after the holiday weekend last week and another hardcore show last Tuesday. Tonight is the first Levitt show, which is only a block away from our store and best of all it’s free.

The Springfield Lucky Horseshoes have started their season and have racked up 2 losses so far. That means they have to play our song! Everytime they lose a game this season they all have to come in and buy a record from us. Some of us plan to attend the game this Friday night, which also happens to be Star Wars night.

Here are your Friday releases this week:
– ATEEZ with “Golden Hour Part 1” (this is K-POP just so you know)… black ice vinyl
– R.E.M.’s third studio album “Fables of the Reconstruction” originally released in 1985
– JOAN JETT with a greatest hits album spanning her career (on black vinyl).
– MAYA HAWKE (actress and musician) with her third (?) full length album, the picture shown is red vinyl but I can’t tell what kind exactly we have coming in, sorry.
– WILLIE NELSON, age 91 years old is here with his 75th studio album, “The Border”
– JOHN MORELAND country artist who played the first LEVITT AMP Springfield series back in 2019, here with a new album “Visitor”

This week Pepperoni has picked another Dead album

“Good morning music fan’s! This one is for all of you dirty old hippies. This week I am picking The Grateful Dead’s twelfth studio album “In The Dark”. It is a must-have for any Grateful Dead collector because it features their only good song that they have – “Touch Of Grey”! You know you all love it. Sometimes I like to put on my jogging shorts and grab my cassette walkman and listen to that song while I jog in Washington Park. Come on, sing along with me! IIiiiii willlll get by, I wiiiiiillll get by, I willll get byyyyeyyeyyeyyeyeyyyy, I will survive!

Losing Our Sh!t Over Toilet Paper

Boy it must be a slow week with no shows as all I hear about is this and that about how the toilet paper is all wrong in our store. You’d think there would be anything else more important??

Anyway, Pepperoni has now taken his rightful place along the Springfield skyline! It may be facing the wrong way on Jefferson where no one will ever see it, but we have a billboard now!

Speaking of Pepperoni, he’s picked Melanie’s Crybaby this week.

“I have my own billboard now and I’m back for another pick. This week it’s rising songwriter / pop artist Melanie Martinez with her 2015 debut “Cry Baby”. Mak from Dumb Records wanted me to let you all know that they were the first ones to like Melanie Martinez (out of everyone in Springfield I guess). Where did this girl come from, did she have her own Disney show when she was younger or something?”

Here are this week’s Friday Releases!
– TWENTY ONE PILOTS with “Clacy” – their seventh studio album! Available on black and indie exclusive clear and red splatter vinyl!
– WALLOWS. Their third full length album “Models” we will have the indie exclusive – it says “orange and clear” for us but that photo looks red and purple to me.
– oh yeah, it’s AQUABATS REIUSSES TIME. The silliest ska band of all time, we are stocking up on “Fury of the Aquabats” and “Return of the Aquabats”.
– DANGER MOUSE & JEMINI have a new album called “Born Again” we will have a few copies of.
– DAVID BOWIE’s “Diamond Dogs” gets reissued and remastered! (Just on black vinyl).

Completely Out of Toilet Paper

This Friday we can finally come up for air after being drowned in unending hardcore shows. An actual mixed bill show with no hardcore bands in sight! That means none of those kids will be here so you can actually stretch out in the venue and just soak in the riffs.

This show will feature brand new Glenwood HS metal band Martyr, Peoria indie rock The Blank Stairs (sorry Brain misspelled your name on the flier), Indianapolis psych-rock Cairo Jag, and local rockers Crash Planet

New vinyl releases this Friday!

– CAGE THE ELEPHANT with their sixth studio album, “Neon Pill” going to be available on black and indie exclusive milky vinyl.
– BILLIE EILISH is here with a NEW album, “Hit Me Hard And Soft” on exclusive blue vinyl.
– A re-issue of BEN FOLDS FIVE 1997 album “Whatever And Ever Amen” (black vinyl)
– Wow! Compilation “NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL K-POP” (this is great because a lot of K-pop artists we are not able to get on vinyl)
– SLASH of Guns N Roses fame is here with a new album “Orgy Of The Damned”
– Aaaaand a new album from AVETT BROTHERS – their self-titled? Available black and exclusive light blue.

We will also have copies of the last SHELLAC album which features the late Steve Albini

This week Pepperoni has picked SZA

“My pick this week is R&B / neo soul singer SZA’s 2017 debut album “Ctrl.” (Feels like a very new album still, but it was 7 whole years ago)! Still, one of the best selling albums to come out in the last decade, this double LP is also in the Rolling Stone’s top 500 albums and was also nominated for four Grammys! With features from artists Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, and more.”

Saturday is gonna be a big day for downtown with Springfield Pridefest, The Famer’s Market, and the Old Capital Art Fair all going on at the same time. Then Saturday night we’re back to the same ol hardcore. For this show we have SPY and Jivebomb from Baltimore, Destiny Bond from Denver, and locals Shroud and Sock ‘Em. I guess this one is a little more notable since it costs $20. Good luck to all the bands.

John Denver with his SHIRT OFF???

Well hello there, just another week with your ol’ pal Dumb Records. We’re up to our ears with hardcore shows as usual and Steve Albini died. Levitt just announced their new summer lineup of free shows happening every Thursday this summer just a block away from us out on the big lawn, and we just got a huge restock on our turntables, CD players, and whatnots. We’re making some small overdue updates to our PA system. Oh and Stern Pinball just announced their newest title John Wick, which we probably won’t be getting. We also might have just moved in a new arcade machine.

Pepperoni has gone and picked Bloody Sabbath this week

“What’s up, I have to say a special welcome to all of the Deftones fans out there that are new followers to our page, I have no idea why my Deftones pick last week went so viral but I guess there’s a lot of you Deftones fans out there. Have any of you heard of a band called Black Sabbath? I’ve picked close to all of their albums at this point! (The ones with Ozzy anyways, should I pick the others???) This was their 5th studio album “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” originally released in 1973. This is actually the 50th anniversary edition pressed on clear vinyl with black smoke that we have in stock. The title track was a hit, but I love this whole album, especially how weird and synthy they get on “Who Are You?” A must have for any fans of the band or early hard rock or metal!”

Sorry for the cropped pic, here are the new releases coming out Friday May 10th!

– A new album from RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE, their fourth studio album called “Love Hate Music Box” out on black and clear vinyl (sorry the picture looks blue)
– the third full length album from American hardcore band KNOCKED LOOSE, “You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To” available on black and “indie exclusive” vinyl (we are not sure what color of indie exclusive we are getting)
– We have a 10th anniversary edition of STURGILL SIMPSON’s “Metamodern Sounds In Country Music” just black vinyl with new artwork.
– ALKALINE TRIO’s 2001 album “From Here To Infirmary” out on red and black splatter vinyl.
– KINGS OF LEON with their ninth studio album “Can We Please Have Fun”
– YELLOWCARD with “Ocean Avenue Acoustic” on “orange inside of yellow” vinyl.

Gosh it’s time for May shows already?? This Friday we have Indiana hardcore bands D.R.L.N. and Velocity, supported by local hardcore bands Innervision and Adieux. Also first show for new local hardcore band Worldview (these things just keep breeding I guess).

Then Saturday night we have a completely different lineup of hardcore bands DEMSFIGHTINWORDS from Chicago, PREMEDETATED from Quebec??, Come Correct from Ohio, Reaver from Alton and local band Keep.

It’s been a while since I’ve TICKLED MY IVORIES

We were pleasantly surprised this week when I happened to flip open the most recent Springfield Tourist guide and found our picture in it really big! Wow was not expecting that! You know sometimes we forget just how hardcore our town is, we do have Lincoln’s actual body after all.

We’ve got a whole MESS of releases coming out this Friday to highlight!
– Jazz saxophonist KAMASI WASHINGTON is out with a double album called “Fearless Movement” on red and blue vinyl.
– Dance-pop artist DUA LIPA with her third studio album “Radial Optimism”
– Folk singer-songwriter FRANK TURNER with his tenth studio album “Undefeated”
– A re-issue of the 2021 EP “Typical of Me” by LAUFEY
– GREEN DAY’s 2000 album “Warning” is being re-issued on green vinyl!
– CAMERA OBSCURA’s first new album in nine years, “Look To The East, Look To The West”
– The Vitamin String Quartet plays the music of Taylor Swift! On exclusive blue swirly vinyl! (Fingers crossed we get this one in)
– The Lemon Twigs “A Dream Is All We Know” – truly beautiful music, available on black vinyl.
– Not pictured: Melanie Martinez’s “K-12” is getting a re-issue and we should have a few copies.

This week Pepperoni has picked this DEFTONES album

“Alright, I am finally picking an album by DEFTONES, this is a band that people ask if we have all of the time so I hope all of you Deftones fans are happy now. Most of these are the 20th anniversary pressing on transparent red vinyl. (This is their self-titled album from 2003). No it’s not the album with the girl on it, it’s the record with the skull on it. What are Deftones anyways, are they like nümetal or more like hard rock?”

This Friday we have another loud kung fu show with California hardcore bands Ceramik and Bare Minimum, and local hardcores Prevention, Volition, and Propaganda
