We know there haven’t been a whole lot of shows lined up on our calendar lately, but we are about to hit August and that’s going to change! One week from tonight, on Tuesday August 7th we have this hardcore show lined up. It features the band Stepping Stone coming all the way from somewhere in Canada! Check out their music on the player below. Also on this show is a few out of town acts and friends from elsewhere in Illinois. This includes the return of Lowered A.D. from Carbondale, who played day one of this year’s Dumb Fest. Capitol Offense will also be making their return from Decatur! It’s been close to a year since we have seen them last. The one Springfield band on this bill is Pryss. Be sure to show up on time to catch it all.

Black Sheep Showcase at Southown Blues Festival August 4th on Outdoor 11th Street Stage

What’s going on here? Well, the weekend of August 4th and 5th our neighbors across the street at Bourbon Street Rhythm & Ribs are setting up the next Southtown Blues Festival where a good portion of 11th and Brown Streets will be blocked off for a weekend full of music, food and games, and even a parade at some point. Black Sheep is lucky to be working with Bourbon Street this year in setting up our own showcase as part of the festival at 1:30 pm, Saturday August 4th on a stage set up directly in front of our building.

Who’s playing? Well, we have the return of Chuck Mountain (or F///\\\M) for short, (you might also know him as Big Baby, B-Dawg, Brandad, etc). We also have a newer Springfield project called Imaginary Colours which performed at our last open mic this past weekend. Stream some of Imaginary Colour’s music on the player below. Up before that is the hip hop project of Jim Whitehead called Animals With Human Names. There will plenty of dancing to be done for that. And don’t forget the last special act we have lined up for this – Nighthawk himself! That’s right.

Our showcase starts at 1:30 pm on Saturday, August 4th but the festival goes on all weekend. Check out more info on the whole festival right here. And find an event for our showcase right here. By the way, the entire festival is FREE for the whole family. Also check out our upcoming shows page for a look at what else we have coming up at Black Sheep for the remainder of the summer.

Black Sheep Fest 2018 Happening August 11th

It’s finally time to tell you about Black Sheep Fest 2018 this year – happening on Saturday, August 11th and including twelve acts (almost) all local to Springfield. Black Sheep Fest happens every year (this is our 11th one) as a celebration of Black Sheep as an all ages venue and also original music coming out of Springfield. Here’s the lineup for this year:

This starts at 3:00 pm on the 11th and admission is $10. Check out the flier by Ty Rodgers above. You can find a facebook event for Black Sheep Fest 2018 right here. Also check out our shows page for a look at everything else coming up at Black Sheep this summer.

Timothy Donavan Russell: “Golden Age”

Today we bring you a new release that may be a couple of months old, but we are bringing it to you anyway. Here is another album by Springfield sound artist Tomothy Donavan Russell. It is called Golden Age going along with a notion by former Springfield poet Vachel Lindsay – that Springfield is to enter a “Golden Age” at some point around the year that we are in. The Pharmacy Art Gallery hosted an art show last month to go along with this prophecy. From an article in The Illinois Times:

In his 1920 novel, The Golden Book of Springfield, Vachel Lindsay conjured up mystical, utopian images of what his hometown of Springfield, Illinois, might look like in the “golden year” of 2018.
Now that time has caught up with Lindsay’s visionary book, the city and its artists have been paying tribute to Lindsay’s vision, none more elaborately than The Pharmacy Gallery and Art Space, which collaborated with the Vachel Lindsay Association on Friday, June 8, for a multimedia art opening / concert / dance party entitled “The Golden Age.”
You can stream Timothy Donovan Russell’s album on the player below. Also head to his bandcamp page to download the album at your own price.

July 15th at Black Sheep: Lucy Furr, Kids Born Wrong, Foam Fangers, This Is A Stick Up!

It turns out the next show at Black Sheep isn’t all the way until close to ten days from now – on Sunday, July 15th. We’ve got a lot of time to get ready and get pumped for this gig! It also turns out there is a show happening inside Dumb Records this same night. (We’ll have a post for that one later). For this show we have two touring bands – one being Lucy Furr from Indianappolis, Indiana. Check out their music on the player below. The other touring act is a band called “Kids Born Wrong” from Louisville, Kentucky. Those bands will be joined by local support from Springfield’s own Foam Fangers – and then also Decatur’s own This Is A Stick Up! (both stellar punk groups).

This one is at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event right here. Bands on this show will be alternating with the ones playing inside Dumb Records. Check out our shows page for a list of what else is coming up at Black Sheep in these coming months.
